Worsted Sock Pattern

Per the request of a reader, here is the pattern that was made up and given to me by Jamie Talbert for knitting socks with worsted weight yarn. I like worsted socks because the knit it up much quicker, are thicker, and therefor perfect for the middle of winter.

Essentially the only thing different is the size of needles and the number of stitches. The bigger the yarn, the less stitches you need.

I use US size 6 circular needles and knit in the magic loop method, toe-up, with an after thought heel. IMHO the socks go much quicker this way. I am not a fan of two circulars for one sock as the needles get in the way and create much to much clutter for one sock. I tried two socks on two circulars once...made it 2 inches into the cuff and threw it out the window. It was maddening! Two socks on one large circular is hard, but not as maddening as the two on two.

Cast on 44 st with worsted wieght yarn and knit as you usually would. Try the sock on often as worsted knits up much quicker then regular sock yarn.

First Poly emerges and first sock of the season!

Oh lookie here! The first of my poly's have emerged! Soon I will have two dozen polu moths flopping about! This one is smaller than I expected a male to be and he does not fly very well. Just kinda flops about. Weird.

And I got myself an inkling to do some socks so I started knitting the first of the three pair that I need for this winter in some yarn I have had stashed away since last fall. It is worsted weight, knit on size 6 circulars. I do the after-thought heel so that is why the gusset looks funky.


I have yet to get a response from the person I am supposed to send a fiber goodie package too. Why does this always happen? I sign up with good intentions and I am always welcomed with disappointment on the receiving end. I suppose if I do not hear from this person in a couple of weeks, all I will send is some fiber and nothing extra to fulfill MY obligation in the swap. I can't send anything extra to someone I cannot communicate with and to get to know their likes and dislikes. I hate to disappoint someone but there has not been any activity on this persons blog in months, and I have emailed twice. I await the fiber frenzy moderators comments about my inquiry of whether or not to send anything. I changed my mind, I have plenty of information from the initial email I got. It really sucks that I cannot seem to connect to the person getting my stuff. *pout* Why I continue to try these swaps...is beyond me!

Toe-Up socks done; The Starbucks Wishing Cup

YAY! It didn't take me very long to knit up these tow up socks. I like the square toe, and that is 18-20 stitches to start the socks with, and work those up to 30 (instead of my usual 32 on each needle because my gauge has loosened from knitting lace). And I thought I would add a picture of my Starbucks wishing cup. Cool story with this. This was the last cup with Wish on it at the local starbucks cafe. I had my eyes on it for several weeks but I was waiting for it to be reduced after Christas. It did and I snatched it! I place my spare change in here, for wishing, and when it gets full I plan to donate the spare change to my local library. By helping others, I am helping myself....right? I keep wishing for a drum carder...LOL!

I wanted to point out something on the heels for others who may be trying the after-thought heel. Try to pick up as few stitches as possible. The right hand sock I picked up 5 stitches on each side, the left, only 3 on each side. The one on the right has a flap and a bump because the heel did not decrease in size enough by the time it reached 2 inches (my prefered heel length). The left one did and has no such flap or bump. Cool aye? They don't match exactly, but who cares, they will be in my shoes! No world ending or sky falling here!

One Toe-up Sock done! Breezing along the mate!

I got my first ever toe-up sock done, and it took me less time to complete than cuff down. I love the toe up and I do believe I will be knitting socks with this method from now on. I bound off using a loose: K1, YO, PSO, K1, PSO and it made a nice ruffled look top the top that I just adore to no end! It also produces a super stretchy bind-off. BTW, PSO is "pass stitch over" like in PSSO only the stitch before it is not slipped.

Then I did the after-thought heel which makes knitting the entire sock take much less time as you don't have to mess with picking up a bunch of stitches, rather, just a few. It's basically a toe of a sock where the heel is and you close it with the kitchier stitch. My heel has knub on each side because I picked up too many stitches in the corners and I had to BO after two inches for my regular heel.

After knitting the Wing of the Moth shawl for almost a week, I discovered that my gauge has loosened up quite a bit, and this sock turned out a little big because of it. So on the mate to this sock I took four stitches off the total and this one will fit much better. So, if you have a death grip on your yarn when you knit, knit some lace to help relax yourself and your grip. :) You HAVE to knit loose when knitting lace. It's a valuable tip for those who do the death grip as I used to when I first started knitting.
