Lovin the Fall weather!

I was outside plying the singles for this wonderful natural color Border Leicester lace yarn for the Secret of the Stole KAL Sunday. The KAL starts Friday with the first clue being released. It took me a full two weeks to spin a bobbin almost full with singles and I only got 550 yards when plied together...that is HALF of what I need! EEP! *faint*
I am not spinning this again until I need it. WHEW! I have other projects to spin for along with some roving for a friend.

I am finally getting around to carding up some more alpaca/merino yarn for the Kimono wrap while at the same time dyeing more targhee for the Mystery shawl as I have run out of several colors.

The yarn shop gave me another shawl to knit. My feelings are mixed about it, but I have to knit something for the shop if I am gonna work there I suppose. I also want to make some thrummed slippers for Mum out of some blue, turquoise, and black Karaoke yarn with merino thrums. I haven't decided what color yet to use. Maybe green for contrast. Those shouldn't take me too long. Then I can send them along with her Bday socks and card this weekend.

The Pipers in the Prairie is this Saturday evening. I hope I have enough to pay the couple charge of $125. I've missed it so many times and I really have this urge to start doing things instead of putting it off till "maybe next time" which I have had to do so often in the past couple of years. I wonder if this is forewarning of a major illness?? Fingers crossed knock on wood nothing drastic happens. I will be turning 30 next year....and I know Saturn is far from done with me. This is just a little hiatus from the chaos for now, I believe. Nice that Saturn gives me brake in-between crisises aye? Is that a word, crisises?

Kimono Wrap on it's way into my World!

I finally started on the cardigan kimono wrap last night, and after an hour of trying to get the FIRST ROW knit correctly (first row is always the hardest for me) I got about two inches done. Some of the terms in the pattern are not the "conventional" terms for stitches (SKP instead of SSK...but the same thing) and I am dealing with decreasing on my own instead of having directions for each row. You can see I have the pattern written down on the pad of paper in the background. I've noted which row of the cables and lace repeat goes on each right side row of the back peice and also noting which rows to decrease. It says to decrease 2 stitches in established pattern repeats every alternating 4th and 3rd row, 3 times, and on every 4th row once. WHEW!! It took a couple of minutes to wrap my head around that, especially at around 11PM last night! HA!


And one more picture of yarn p0rn before it gets transformed into my first garment. :) I am sure I will need more than that but I have enough now that I can take a brake from spinning and dyeing like a mad woman. Tee-hee-hee! The yarn is OOBER soft when knit up. I am so excited about this thing. My guage is a little off too. I tried the suggested size 8 and I had 3.5 stitches an inch. The guage calls for 5 an inch. So I went down to a size 7 and now I have 4 an inch. I don't want to go down any more sizes of needle because this is creating a tight fabric with such heavy yarn. This is okay though! It will be just a tad bigger and will fit me better since my bust measurement is 42, and it is only patterned out to a size 40. I am sure I will continue to shrink, and this will always fit me-even if oober loose...but my favorite pieces of clothing are oober loose. :)

Dyeing like a mad woman!

I am dyeing and spinning like a mad woman in order to be able to cast on the Kimono Wrap for the first day of the KAL .
At first I thought my first skein of spun yarn was more DK than worsted, but upon washing, dyeing, and finally drying it, it has fluffed up a bit! So I will knit a swatch out of it to see if it will work....or not.
I decided to stripe dye the yarn in purple and royal blue with sections tied off to get specks of white. I cannot wait to see what a swatch will look like!


And my craft area is always cluttered...but who said being a craft bug would be neat and orderly?! HAaaaaaaaaa!! I have found that swiffer dusters make cleanup under the carder when I am done go a lot quicker. It doesn't grab all the crap that comes off the fleece onto the table, but it's like a whisk-broom.

You can see my production line in the pic with the drum carder. Merino to the left, Alpaca to the right...all ready to be blended together.

An interesting thing happened in the dye pot with this blend of yarn. Alpaca is notorious for needing twice as much dye to get a complete dyeing than it would wool. The dye striked the Merino in the yarn first leaving the alpaca only slightly dyed with color. It's a neato and unexpected effect! I love dyeing!!!

My LYS, the one I work at now, is gonna carry MERINO ROVING!!! How lucky am I?!! I can order just about any kind of top through the LYS now and...get my premo-employee discount to boot! I did take next weekend off so I could go to the wool festival. Yippie!! Speaking of wool festival, I get a "Get in free" pass from the local spinners guild since I am planning to come and help with the sheep to shawl demonstration. Sweeeeeeeeet!!! I tell you what...the right attitude in life makes one a very lucky person!!

The BF has been calling me "Pretty-thang" after a clip on one of his favorite cartoons "Samurai Jack". He is just the cutest thang when he says that! I miss hearing things like that from him. The experiment is working!!!!!!!

The Fiber Frenzy pal got my package and she was all giddy over it all! I sent a lot of fiber and bought a few well priced extras to send along. I am so happy that she is happy with the swap! I still need to find maple candy to send along as a thank you to the lady that sent me fiber goodies. I just don't have the money at the moment. I don't even have the money to send out the red scarf to the Orphan Foundation!! Oye. I should have some to use for postage Tuesday, but most of that is gonna get put back for the fiber festival. I really ought to start a savings fund JUST for this fiber festival. I really enjoyed it last year even though it was unseasonably cold and rainy. This year, I plan on bringing some pants, my shawl, and a jacket...just in case! Because you know if I come prepared it will be unseasonably warm!! At least, that is what I hope will happen!!!

OH! And I finally got my needle tips from Knitpicks. I dunno why, but it takes seven days to get tips from them, and only three to four when I order yarn...on the rare occasion that I do buy yarn. Weird aye? Now I can transfer my two socks on the one circular to a larger cabled circular.

Natural Dying Results with Walnuts!

First the Festering Dye Pot which is essentially just a pot of soaking walnuts from nearby trees. This has been sitting and festering in the sun for about three weeks. I read that walnut dye needs no mordant because of the tannin in the walnuts acts as the mordant. I am not much for natural dyeing. I don't have the patience to wait for the results once I get into the mind set of wanting to dye. This is essentially the lazy ass method! LMAO!!







Here is a picture of a sample spun up of a batt I blended with Merino and Alpaca. The Festering Dye Pot smells like brewing mead and has a sweet and sour smell. Needless to say I hate getting it on my hands, but squeezing out the liquid is the best method I know of to gauge what the yarn will look like dried.

And here are the results after only 24 hours of sitting in the Festering Dye Pot WITH NO HEAT. I wonder how much yarn I can plop into this Festering pot before the dye exhausts? We'll find out. I am gonna test this sample to see if the dye washes out. I just love the bronze coloring! The odor of the Festering Dye Pot did not linger in the yarn after it was dried so that was a pleasant surprise.

Dyeing extravaganza!

I dyed some roving in purple, brown and orange for Project Spectrum, and then I dyed up some recycled sweater yarn in red for the Red Scarf Project. I had some fun with the camera and took a couple fast action pictures.

First day on the job...

At the LYS was not bad at all! I was worried about being on my feet for too long as I remember the 6 hour nights at Hobby Lobby when I would be in pain by the fourth hour from standing for so long. Of course this place is no HL because it is a wonderfully small and independent place. I learned how to use thier form of checkout which was a crash course on my first day as 4 customers when in there when we opened and were ready to check out within 5 minutes! I think I got it down. I will be working there for the next 4 saterdays so I can get my training down and then I will be working there every other Saterday. That is perfect for me. I like having a second job, but I don't like working the whole weekend or every weekend. So this one might just work really well for me.

I get to do another demo project. *jumps up and down with joy!!* The Flower Basket lace shawlette in the Vickie Howell soy silk and mulberry silk yarn, in turquoise. OOOOOoh how yummy that yarn is!! SOooooooo sooooooooooft!!! OYE! I love doing these sample projects with different yarns for the store! Loverly yarn p*rn photos to come!!

Well I think I will spin up the rest of the blue wool and ply it, maybe get a few rows of that prayer shawl done and start on the demo for the LYS.

*cough-Hack-cough* Waiting for Fiber Fling to begin...

Okay, I have to stay home tonight from karate. I am still weak in the knees with this cold and I am sure no one would appriciate me hacking through pratice. I am waiting for the Fliber Fling swap assignments to go out...hopefully I will not get a rip-off, crazy-person in this one. Sign ups closed Friday, and they said it would take a few days to get them out. So I wait.

I have two sponsors for my blogathon! YAY! One being the LYS down the street! I made some flyers that I am gonna hand out to the local businesses around here and see if I can rummage up some more support. I don't think I will get around to it today because I feel so tired. I'll do it Tuesday.

I got all those singles plied up navajo style, and I set all the yarn (46 yards worth) in the sink with hot water and plenty of soap. I plan to partially full the yarn to even it out and soften it up a bit. I really hate navajo plying. I always get coils where the yarn is pulled through the loop. I hate that!

Jar Dyeing results, tarot baggie, Call me "Ms. Fix-it"!

Pictures!! We have my jar dyeing results drying in the sun *drool!!*, a tarot baggie knit out of the cotton/wool blend I made, a picture of the Velvet Purple Miniture Lilly that is blooming fantastically in my patio area, and the brown yarn is shetland and yack down blend which is superly soft!

Just call me Ms. Fix-it. I upgraded the tank components in the toilet to stop the slow leak because of old and warn seals. The toilet no longer leaks water! Hurray for saving water!! But something must have settled when I removed the tank to replace the seal under there because after I put it all back together, the toilet didn't want to flush right. The water would swirl but never go completely down like it is supposed to. So upon pondering and reading up on removing the whol damn toilet from the floor to clean the gate before the flap inthe floor, found a better way. We live in an apartment building so getting the water turned off is not an option. I have no problem doing the simplier repairs because the man that is supposed to do these things has shit for brains.

So I went to Menards (for the fourth time starting this project) and got a toilet auger and a super plunger. The auger got a whole lot of something stirred up and loose, and the super plunger must have forced it down the drain as the toilet flushes properly now. YAY! Go womyn power!! I really love how when I asked a Menards employee (much younger than myself even) if there was a tool to aid in removing the old flushing valve, he said "It is super simple to get off but there is no specialised tool for it." *eyebrow raised* There is no plumping tools to help me aye? As soon as he walked away, I went one isle down and found a shit load of plumping tools...and oversized "wrenches" for the very job I asked about. What is up with that shit? Don't tell me there is no specialized tool for it...there is a specialized tool for EVERYTHING!!! *snicker-snort* Did he think I would not find the tools or comprehend how to do the job, or that I was not capable of doing the job because I lack a penis between my legs? Typical male bullshit.

So I have also fixed the sagging chicken wire on the garden. I dunno why it was sagging but I added another peice of wood to the center to keep it up and support the center of the wire incase we get anymore hail this year. Last year the hail made a huge dent in the wire and it has sagged ever since. While I was outside with the electric staple gun, I also fixed the sagging fabric on the bottom of the patio above us. It's there for more privacy than anything, but it helps contain his mess of bird seed as well.

Today I am ficxing a cabinet door that needed new hinges. I need another set of hands for that one so I have to wait till the BF comes home from work to help me. One of these days I will look into fixing the damned leak in the kitchen shink drain. I drained a gallon of water out from the bucket under the sink. A gallon in three days...sheez!

Die Cell phone...DIE!!!

I did it. I finally did it. I had the BF call and cancel the cell phone service (he opened for me because my credit was not impeccable enough). I have been paying $60 or more a month for a service I rarely use anymore. Originally it was so I could call Mom without racking up a HUGE long distance bill. We now have charter broadband phone service and it comes with free long distance so the cell phone is now obsolete. My Best Friend in Indiana finally got a computer at home so there is no need to text me anymore. Now I just gotta pay off the $165 bill! I am gonna start getting rid of things like this that I do not need or can live without. I am gonna payoff and close my book clubs as well (only 2 but they are tempting because of the Bill Me feature).

I have a new friend to help me sleep, called Brandy. HA! I have about 4 ounces of Brandy before bed and I am set to sleep like a flippin rock man! Makes it hard to type though...oye...and the drawback is that it tends to make me sweat....a lot. Yuck! Can you say morning shower?!

I am finally getting around to cleaning the Mohair that I have, but I cannot stand the texture nor the allergic reaction I get from even the cleaned fiber. It is even a pain in the ass to card!! So I am gonna list it on my Etsy Store and see if I can get my purchase price of $35 back. What a waist! I have am cleaning and carding just a bit over an ounce that I am selling in carded batts for $6. I don't want to charge too much, but this is a lot of work and takes a lot of soap to clean!

My jar dyeing results are ready to post but I can hardly see streight enough to type, so posting pictures will have to wait till tomorrow! I also made a tarot baggie out of the cotton and wool blend yarn I made. The yarn came out bulky at 9 WPI so the baggie knit up quickly. There really isn't much to knit from...maybe a small drawstring bag? Or maybe a computer monster if I pair it with some funkay eyelash? Yeah, definately not diggin the Kelly Green...yuck! I think yellow or salmon would have been better.

I am gonna try Kettle Dyein next. I need to find a nice balance of blues, dark green and red. I want an oceanic feel.

Baby Robins, WIP's, other stuff

The babies in the Robins nest outside my residence are growing quickly!! In just over a week they have gone from sightless fluffs of flesh and blood to having pin feathers and sight! They is so cute! I check on them every few days and the one in the forground of the second photo looked streight at me and went back to sleep. Not a care in the world!!

I found a hawk feather in the driveway this morning. I think it is a redtail, but I am not positive. It rests on my dreaming altar in the bedroom.

Here is my progress on the second bycicle handlebar pack. I love how the varigation of the yarn marbles when felted!! Writing out the directions for this is a pain in the ass and a big headache, but I am sure it will be worth it in the end.

Then I got the Mason Dixen book from the library and I am knitting a mini-Kimono for my teady bear. I am just cutting the stitches in the directions in half. Instead of 40 CO I did 20-etc, etc, etc.

I contacted Blogger CS about the handfull of sheep who are flagging my blog and why. They told me they did not see anything objectional on my blog so I do not have to worry about deletion. HOWEVER, they are gonna contact the blog host of the person who is instigating all of the flagging. MMMmmm, sweet-sweet, poetic, justice. 'Nuff time wasted on that!

I found Alpaca camping in my garden...

Alpaca yarn that is and I kind a placed it there. *snicker-snort*
Two pictures in one. My spinach is growing loverly and I dyed this freshly spun two ply alpaca laceweight yarn for this month's project spectrum's challenge. Yellow, green and pink...a triad. The pink came out more red...oh well. Not really something I would pick in color combinations, but at least I got to experience it. Kinda reminds me of cotton candy actually.
The purple birds nest is some purple died alpaca HAND BLENDED with burgandy dyed silk caps. I like the sploches of burgandy here and there from the un-uniform silk roving.


Next is the soap cosy I knit out of a one ply thick and thin yarn that was one of the first I spin up. Nice! Eventually it will felt up and when the soap is gone, I will make a special charm pouch out of the felted material. Nifty Aye?!

And the last picture is of my precious Dwarf Lilac bush. It is absolutely FILLED with leaves this year! I am so happy it bounced back from last year. Last year I kept it inside over winter because I feared the roots would dye if they froze. I guess not. There are only a few flower clusters, but that is enough for me because the anticipation of the upcoming frangrance explosion is driving me mad!! I love lilac!!

I found a yarn meter!

Or rather, a fishing line meter. Seems that the Nancy's Knitknacks uses the same brand of fishing line meters made by Shakespeare fishin products. Get ready for this...brace yourself...

Nancy's yarn meter (wood and all) is $50

I paid $14 for the meter alone (that measures in feet instead of yards) that can be clipped securly to just about ANYTHING. I'm wondering why the Nancy product is so darned much money! Being the crafty person I am, I could construct something similar for just a couple bucks! But, I am more ambitious than that. I want to be able to meter the yarn as I wind it onto my skein winder. From what I am thinkin, I think I need to add a dowel through the main stem, and then attach another dowel to it at a right angle so that the meter is in line with the yarn being wound onto the winder.

I tested the meter out and it turns out that I have 100 yards of my silk and alpaca yarn left from the wing of the moth shawl. Hummm...what can I knit out of that?

HUmmm, so if I put a screw through the dowl and just have it bolted to the main stem, then I could loosen it to fold down when not in use. I think I have the materials I need for this. If not, it's gonna be a fantastic day to bike down to Menards.

Favorite yarn-fugly yarn...spuckly even...

I gotta say, my most favorite yarn, that I have ever had the pleasure to touch, has been merino blended with silk (or any other soft wool blended with silk)...Oh. My. Goddess. Softness with a sparkle that is TO DIE FOR! That is where I got my inspiration for the alpaca and silk yarn I have been spinning and knitting into a Wing of the Moth shawl. Of which...with less than 10 rows to go...I have put aside for now. You say "Only 10 to go!? GO!-GO!-GO! KNIT LIKE THE WIND!" but then I say "It takes an hour a row to do now because of the sheer SIZE of the shawl now. WHEW...heavy and warm...with spring in full swing it gets hot under that thing!!" Okay...did I just do one hell of a nifty rhyme?! LMAO!! YEeeeeeeeaaaaaahhh!! Call me Shakespear-ella!! ;-P

I would have blended the silk with the alpaca if I had had the means to do so. Instead I just plied them together.

My least favorite has to be Mohair...I found out the hard way that mohair and I do not get along. AS I was cleaning a raw adult mohair fleece (which turned out to be course as hell!!), I broke out in hives where my arms came in contact. Nice sheen, but a pain in the arms (HA!) to clean up and card! Even kid mohair is ruff to me. Blah. Besides that, I can get the same sort of sheen out of lincoln longhair...even alpaca for a lot less mo-nay! SPUCK!

Goodwill Treasure Finds!!! And a little complaining...as usual

OMG look at what I found at Goodwill today!! I was able to make it to the east side store right after they opened and before the retiree's came through (antique hunters). I found EIGHT 50 gram skiens of some italian yarn in a beautiful hunter green priced at...brace yourself...$.69 each!!!!!! *SQUEELS* OH MY GOD(dess)!!! It is soft and shiney made from Bomull, Lin, and Akryl of which I have no idea what those are but the yarn is soft and shiney, plus I really can't complain at $.69 a skien!!

Then I found TWO Aquascene 2 tanks, one with a light, and the other without a light but with a lot of goodies. I got two new air pumps to boot-one with each. One I made into Skye's new home, and the other I am gonna set up for a betta for a friend for her birthday. She has been saying she's been wanting another one...so here I go to set it up for her! This tank is much bigger than what Skye was in...and I don't think he really knows what to do with all the space he has now!! LMAO!

Now for the complaining....

Must be nice to be rich. Argh! I saw today that the Woolee winder has gone up to $185!!! There is NO WAY I would pay that much for that little bit of equipment that may or may not work correctly. *faint* I had been wanting one, but even at the old price of $150 I was hesitant to purchase it. Sheez. I can do without it. I just need a jumbo kit for the kiwi...or a bigger wheel which I am seriously considering. That thunkita noise coming from the Kiwi is driving me up the wall!!

To end on a positive note...kinda...

I bought myself 4.5 pounds of raw white alpaca blanket fleece. What new years resolution?? LMAO!!! I cannot wait to get my hands in that! I won it from an Ebay auction so I paid a lot less than I would normally would have for so much fiber. NICE!!

Okay I have to get off this thing and practice my karate for tomorrows promotion!! I am trying my darndest to convience the BF to come with me so he can shoot some digital video of the session so that I can send it to Mum so she can see what I am learning. But I dunno if he will or not. I have to push and fight with him to do anything with me and I am really sick and tired of doing that. He really hasn't been too supportive of me lately...and I'm a tad paterved. Now I cannot sleep because he figgits all flippin night long! ARGH!!! I haven't slept well all week because of it! Sleeper sofa...here I come! He won't see a doctor about anything, even though he has health insurance. Now one side of his face is swollen because of a tooth absest ( he doesn't brush his teeth and his teeth look nasty-very nasty...and then he wonders why I won't french it with him....eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwaaaah!!!!!!!).

MEN!!! *pulls hair out*

Project Spectrum-Blues and Silvers

I tried a new dyeing technique that I learned from the Totally Twisted E-Zine (Cost: Single Issue: $7.00 +$3.00 S/H, Year Subscription: $20.00 +$10.00 S/H, email delivery available for no shipping charge).
The camera doesn't like the colors that much, which really dulls the colors on the finished skien but it glourious! I used turquoise, royal blue, and lilac purple in the middle. The top layer of yarn dyed lighter than the bottom and fives a nice varigation effect through the skien. It's sooooooo pretty in person. I wish I could get an accurate picture!

OOOO softy-lofty-yarny-p0rny-goodness(y?)

Okay I could not wait to try out the new skien winder so I started to spin up the HUGE ball of combed fiber I had been prepin here and there through-out the last week. The picture of the wound ball of fine shetland singles I had to sharpen up a bit to get more detail to show. Camera does not like blues, purples, and bright whites. This is a HUGE ball of singles and I stil have half of it to ply up because the bobbin was filled on HALF of the singles!

You can see the winder in use and it is tall enough that I can wind directly off the Kiwi with little to no assistance from me. NICE! We were watching a PBS special on the Blue Man Group. See them on the tellie (along with the cluttered mess? Can't help it. Two people living in a small apartment with all thier junk stuffed into every nook and cranny...a couples life). The yarn I got from these singles is luciously soft and lofty and oOOOOooo so yarn p0rny goodnessy! It is much easier to tie a figure right tie on the floor winder because it is about my hieght and I can easily turn it to tie the other sides. I cannot wait to dye it! OOooh I am in a hyper mood right now. Have you seen this? No Sheep For you is a book about knitting with all the OTHER fibers (including "modern synthetics") that yarn snobs hate. OOOoo it's a yarn snobs NIGHTMARE! Yarn snobs, this chuck is for you! HA! What is it with snobbiness with yarn anyways? What's wrong with synthetics? They are soft...sparkly, and sometimes right down COOL!

Humph! I am a Yarn Snob-Snob. Take that and rewind it back!

Skien Comparrison

Here is a picture of two skiens. The one on the left, turquoise, was made on the newly constructed floor skien winder. The one on the right, rust orange, was made on my homemade PVC niddy-noddy. The floor skien winder makes a skien that is slightly smaller. Both of these were hand-dyed by me.
